As you might imagine, a show about a super wealthy family and their servants has quite a few choice quotes about money. My favorite Downton Abbey quotes about money come from Lady Grantham, the Dowager Countess. She’s old, she’s rich, and she is full of opinions. Here are some of my favorite Lady Grantham moments:
Jennifer’s Favorite Downton Abbey Quotes
The Dowager Countess is being sarcastic in this instance, in response to someone who asks a rather direct question about money, but the truth is it’s always a good idea to talk to your spouse about money so your family can be on the same page with your budget.
Without any idea of what it’s like to work or to be around people who have weekends off, the Dowager Countess wouldn’t be able to tell a weekend from a Wednesday. Sounds nice, but I’d miss the lovely feeling of a lazy Sunday morning.
Pretty astute for a woman who was so focused on making sure that everyone knew that she and her family were in an untouchable class above all others. Or you could, um, just marry for love.
The Dowager Countess makes this remark about a man who is pursuing her daughter’s hand in marriage, and she suspects that he’s hiding just how broke he really is so he can get his hands on the Grantham fortune. Too bad there wasn’t credit score dating back then.
This is my favorite quote because A) It’s directed at Edith who is distraught because she thinks she will be an old maid aunt even thought she’s young and beautiful and rich and has amazing dresses. Seriously, Edith, look at what you’re wearing. And B) because it’s a fun thing to say when you’re feeling fancy.
What are your favorite Downton Abbey quotes and moments? Would you rather have lived upstairs with the wealth and drama or downstairs with the camaraderie?
