In the 10 days since the tsunami hit Japan, our customer base has come out in droves to support victims of this horrible natural disaster.
A few hours after the disaster began, the team at PerkStreet sprung to action, creating a whole new perks redemption option that allows customers to donate the rewards, or perks, they earn with PerkStreet to the Red Cross. Although PerkStreet has never offered charitable donations as a redemption option before, almost 15% of our customer redemptions have been to the Red Cross.
“PerkStreet’s greatest goal as a company is to prove that a sound financial institution like ours can improve people’s lives — that we can fix banking for our customers. This Red Cross donation project has been a testament to that idea,” noted CEO Dan O’Malley when our data team delivered this news today.
“These are the rewards customers earned for themselves, but they’re giving them to people in need,” he continued. “It really warms your heart to know those are the kind of people we’re doing business with.”
Perhaps the greatest point of pride for PerkStreet as an organization has been our own ability to give 5% cash back on all the money our customers donated out of their PerkStreet Financial checking accounts in the first week after the tsunami.
Every time one of our customers made a donation to the Red Cross using their PerkStreet Financial Debit Card through any Red Cross website, we made sure those donations yielded 5% PowerPerks — boosted rewards — for the customer. This way, PerkStreet has been able to improve the lives of our customers incrementally when they reach in their pockets to improve the lives of Japanese disaster victims.
“Our customers have stepped up to help those in need, and we’ve gotten behind them to help them give even more,” said O’Malley in closing. “We want to empower people to change their own lives, but this project has empowered our customers to change the lives of others as well. These are the moments that make PerkStreet great. I couldn’t be happier about the way our customers have reacted.”
PerkStreet customers have opened their hearts and taken action to support tsunami victims in a show of force we never expected when we launched this Red Cross project. As a result, PerkStreet will continue to offer Red Cross donations as a perks redemption option indefinitely until the situation in Japan is under control and those who need help from the Red Cross have received it, or at least until our customers stop donating all their perks to the Red Cross to help these natural disaster victims.
