Shower yourself in bonus cash back with April PowerPerks
April PowerPerks | PerkStreet Financial

Looking for 5% cash back on debit? It’s not an April Fools’ joke. This month, you’ll not only earn PowerPerks as you support independent hardware stores, but double down on group activities as you save cash and earn bonus perks.

Groupon™

5% back on deals from Groupon.com will make spending time (and saving money) with those you love doubly sweet this month. Whether you are planning on treating yourself to a frugally fun meal, are thinking of skydiving (I did via a Groupon offer!), or just want to explore the something new this Spring, enjoy 5% cash back on all online Groupon purchases this April.

Ace Hardware®

Looking for some extra incentive to start that next home improvement or gardening project? We have just the thing. Earn 5% PowerPerks locally when you shop at your nearby, independently-owned Ace Hardware store. One of the 4,600 nationwide Ace stores not in your neighborhood? Don’t worry. You’ll earn bonus perks with online purchases, too, at AceHardware.com. Celebrate local commerce, national Lawn and Garden Month, and extra perks, too, this April.

How did we pick these places?

We didn’t. You did! Each month, we select a handful of options based on places where our customers shop often and allow everyone in our customer base and community to vote for their favorite categories here on the blog. We have to avoid extremely popular spots like Walmart and gas stations, because offering 5% on these would strain our business. However, requests for bonus earnings at places like these influenced our decision to offer 2% cash back to all customers on purchases at major online retailers beginning on April 4, 2012, including Walmart.com and others.*

Details: PowerPerks bonus perks limited to $5,000 in spend every calendar year. Unless specific stores are named, qualifying purchases are determined by Merchant Category Codes. Some redemption options require you to use additional perks beyond the redemption value, effectively reducing your cash back rate. Non-PIN debit card purchases will earn 5% cash back in April at the following retailers: Ace Hardware® (online and in-store) and Groupon™ (online only).

really… only two and none of them within 200 miles of me.

I noticed we can use our cards on amazon for 2% but when I add the card to my account on amazon, they label it automatically as a debit–and my concern is how can I get them to charge the mastercard as opposed to an ACH transaction so I can earn perks?

  • sarah

I tinkered around with it and it seems amazon doesn’t give you the option to select debit/credit, it assumes debit if you add a new card during the checkout process.  I exited the checkout process and logged into my account, went to the page to edit payment methods and I was able to uncheck “use as debit” box and it now appears as a mastercard.  Hope that helps someone else :)

Sorry Wmdwf. We always try to pick places for the election that as much of our customer base as possible can take advantage of, but with a nation-wide customer base, this can prove challenging at times. Make sure you weigh in on next month’s PowerPerks poll — you could even ask your fellow customers to vote for certain things in the comments. If you have a good reason, they might listen. The good news? We switch PowerPerks every month, so even though this month was a disappointment for you, next month is a whole new chance to score bonus rewards.

    Sarah,
Sorry for the delay here. I think I know what you’re bumping into here. We wrote a blog post about it a while back. I hope this helps. If not, please drop us an email at help@perkstreet.com and we’ll try to help you out with this weird scenario: http://blog.perkstreet.com/pinless-debit-card-transactions-can-cost-you-perks/

    Hey Frankedotcom,
I’m not sure the promotion you’re talking about is still running. Here’s all I can find about it. http://www.groupon.com/pages/discover-card-terms

If it is still an active offer, we certainly couldn’t blame you for using Discover on Groupon purchases. Hmm. Hopefully we’ll be able to get to the bottom of this.

Discover has a program called  ShopDiscover for card members that gives a certain percentage cash back for shopping at a TON of various online retailers.  The 15% cash back for Groupon is always in effect.  Here’s the list:

Well, that totally stinks – I bought a ton of stuff on Amazon thinking I was getting the perks using my card and now I realize I didn’t get anything!

    Thanks Lauren,
It looks like you guys are right. Hmm. 15% at Groupon with Discover is pretty sweet. Is that applied any time you make a Groupon purchase with Discover, or do you have to log into the site from the URL you provided in order to “turn it on” ???

We are trying to do everything we can with rewards while avoiding the “opt-in” — It just doesn’t seem fair to have to jump through a special hoop to get a deal you were promised.

Thanks much for tracking this down for all our customers who also have Discover cards!

Hi – I am BRAND new to Perkstreet. I don’t even have my debit card yet – but I do have a quick question, how soon will I see the Perks? I.e.: if I get my card on Monday, and buy a Groupon, can I log on that night and see how much I have earned?
    Thanks!
