Take Our Wallet Challenge: Avoid Impulse Buys
Stop Impulse Buys with Our Wallet Challenge

True confession time: My worst spending habit is making impulse buys.

A magazine in the checkout line, a sweater from the nearby mall because I’m cold in the office, an iced coffee to cure an afternoon craving… each time I say, “Oh it’s just this one little thing.”

We all know those little things can add up quickly!

Last week we sent a DailyPerk email sharing my original Wallet Challenge story. I accidentally left my wallet at home one day — has that ever happened to you? —  and I decided to use it as an opportunity to cut back on my impulse buys. Instead of a coffee here or a snack there, I tracked all of the stuff I didn’t buy and was shocked to see how quickly those little things add up.

One awesome PerkStreeter, Dale C., told her story on our Facebook wall, and invited others to join her in the Wallet Challenge.

Wallet Challenge

Dale's story inspired many, including me

We hear you, Dale. We’re ready.

Next Wednesday, September 5, join me and leave your wallet home.

You can also hide it away, or have a friend hold it (an honest friend), or do what you need to do to make sure you’re not tempted to impulse shop.

Comment here or visit our Facebook wall to tell us how you did, and to offer encouragement to others who are taking the challenge!

You never make impulse buys? You stick close to your budget every day? That’s awesome! Why not try another challenge, like a No Spend Month, or Kyle and Brad’s 30 Day Restaurant Challenge?

Will you join us for Wallet Challenge Wednesday and avoid impulse buys for 24 hours? Meet me in the comments and let’s get ready to do this.

I’m starting the envelope system…again. This time, however, I’ll NOTbe taking my checkbook into the stores with me when purchasing groceries & gasand the like, which will force me to be diligent and purposeful in my spending. I’m determined to make this work and I’m surprised at how undisciplined I can be sometimes!!

Oooh PerkStreeters, I totally blew this one. Between very little sleep (a teething baby is a terrible alarm clock) and starting my morning with an appointment instead of the usual routine, I realized it was 10am and I not only hadn’t eaten, but I didn’t have my breakfast or my lunch with me.

Not only that, by the time I got to lunch I was so hungry and sleepy that I bought what sounded good – an almost $12 salad. I KNOW! I know.

I’m going to try this again next week. How did you do?

Okay, I forgot to take my wallet out of my purse, but I held with the intent of NWW. What I was amazed was with the # of shopping e-mails I received that day. I normally open them and skim to see if there are any good deals. However, on Wed, I just opened and deleted (didn’t want them to start going to spam.)

I worked really well and I’m going to keep with NWW, but I’m also thinking about starting a no-spend week (exceptions – bills due and gas for the car–is buying a gas card the week before allowed?).

I think just an external “no” helped.

I’ve done that before. It’s okay! You know better next time. Can you keep food at the office? I have a bowl and some oatmeal packets at work. Sometimes, it may not sound good, but it’s better than the $12 salad at the grocery store or the fast food places around here.

Thanks for the encouragement! I usually make packets of oatmeal with cinnamon and dried cherries or blueberries, or I bring one of those breakfast sandwiches I posted the recipe for, I just didn’t get around to making them this weekend. We have a fridge and freezer at the office, too – I should think about food to bring on Monday that can stretch for lunches all week!
