The holiday season inspires us to give – primarily through personal gifts. And unless you’re the Grinch, odds are you’re more excited about the gifts you’ll give your loved ones than you are about the ones you’re about to receive. But unlike the holiday season, the excitement and joy you get from giving can last all year long.
Think of the way a child’s eyes light up when they tear into a shiny package and unveil a new toy, or the way your mother tears up when you give her a heat-felt gift. Let’s face it: Giving feels good, and it gives you a sense of fulfillment like nothing else can. So why not carry that feeling on throughout the year?
Give More Than Gifts
There are countless ways to give to others in need. You can give money to your favorite charity, your community center, or your church. You can volunteer at a local soup kitchen, food bank, or shelter. You can offer your time or other resources to a neighbor you know is in need.
Giving doesn’t have to be extravagant or expensive—just thoughtful. Generosity is about recognizing the need of another and offering an act of kindness, no matter how big or small. Sometimes, that means giving money; but sometimes – and perhaps more importantly – that means being willing to give yourself.
Giving Keeps On Giving
Giving isn’t about shuffling money from one place to another. Giving isn’t about money at all. It’s about fulfillment. When you realize that there are others less fortunate than you, and you have a genuine desire to help, you can help fulfill their need. In turn, you will also gain a great sense of fulfillment. Others will see your generosity and may be inspired to give as well, and in turn they’ll be fulfilled. The cycle goes on and on. Even the smallest acts of kindness can change someone’s life.
